I can honestly say that a lot of emotion is put into judging skin color. Famous faces and regular folks are challenged when their skin color appears to have been altered in photographs. Sure, sometimes they are lightened on purpose, sometimes naturally, sometimes pics can even be darkened. Why do we pay so much to color yet tell people...

It really depends on the light, the season, the weather, the color of clothing, hair color, etc. My color changes drastically in sunlight, shade, night and day.

What's the problem if someone light skinned wants a darkened color? Or someone darker skinned wants lighter skin. Or lighter hair color, or whatever. We all have preferences.
